Data & API
Consumer Recalls USA is built on public domain data from U.S. federal government agencies. We aggregate, normalize, and index recall records from multiple official sources to make them searchable in one place. All underlying source data is public domain U.S. government data.
Data Sources
- openFDA API — Food recalls, drug recalls, and medical device recalls are sourced from the openFDA API, maintained by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. openFDA provides structured access to FDA enforcement reports and recall notices.
- CPSC SaferProducts API — Consumer product recalls are sourced from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's SaferProducts.gov data feed. This covers toys, furniture, appliances, electronics, and thousands of other consumer goods.
- NHTSA Recalls API — Vehicle recalls — covering automobiles, trucks, motorcycles, tires, child safety seats, and related equipment — are sourced from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's public recall database and API.
- USDA FSIS — Meat, poultry, and egg product recalls issued by the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service are incorporated into our food recall database. FSIS data is sourced from the USDA's public recall listings.
Data Freshness
Our database is updated daily. We pull new and updated recall records from each source every 24 hours. Because government APIs publish recalls on their own schedules, there may be a lag of up to 24 hours between an official recall announcement and its appearance on this site.
For time-sensitive safety situations, always check the official agency source directly: FDA Recalls, CPSC Recalls, NHTSA Recalls, or USDA FSIS Recalls.
Consumer Recalls USA API
We are working on a public API that will allow developers and researchers to query our normalized, cross-agency recall database programmatically. If you're interested in early access or have a specific use case, please contact us at data@consumerrecallsusa.com.
