THE WELDED WEDGE INSIDE THE COUPLER HOLDS THE BALL CLAMP WHICH ASSURES THAT THE BALL CLAMP HAS A FULL GRIP ON THE TOWING BALL WHICH MAY NOT HAVE BEEN SUFFICIENTLY WELED OR THE WEDGE MAY HAVE BEEN OMITTED IN PRODUCTION.
